The Hurtwood Control Trust is a registered charity, Number 200053, which manages the rights of access and promotes enjoyment of The Hurtwood

The Hurtwood is the name given to an area of over 3000 acres (1200 Hectares) of beautiful Surrey heath and woodland embracing Holmbury Hill, Pitch Hill, Winterfold, Shere Heath, Farley Heath and part of Blackheath.
Although it is the largest area of common land in Surrey, the land is privately owned by Shere Manor Estate and by Albury Estate.
In 1926 the land owners entered into deeds of dedication whereby the area continues to be privately owned but is dedicated for public use for the taking of "air and exercise" - effectively a permission to roam - setting a precedent for public access more than 80 years ahead of its time. Before visiting, please take the time to read the Code of Conduct, which can be found here.
